The Legend of Five Kernels of Corn
Today’s winner of the Squidoo Thanksgiving Cookoff (for charity) doesn’t share a recipe at all but instead shares the legend of the Five Kernels of Corn, a touching tradition that has been passed down to us from the Pilgrims.
Funny thing is that when I began reading the story, I realized that my family has been “some what” following this tradition on Thanksgiving Day for many years without knowing why.
When my youngest was much younger he came home from school one November day and insisted that we start having corn with our Thanksgiving meal. When I asked him why, he said, because of the Pilgrims. Up until then I had only served what I thought were special vegetables on Thanksgiving, things like candied yams, stuffed mushrooms, and green bean casserole. Not wanting to disappoint him, I opened a can of corn, heated it up and served it with our dinner that year, and every year since.
In fact, it became a little family joke. Each year, when I served it, we’d laugh.
Now that I’ve read the story of the Five Kernels of Corn, I’m sure his teacher had shared the legend with the class all those years ago, and I now realize just how special that simple side dish really is.
